Job interview basics: What to bring

You’ve found the perfect outfit, researched the company thoroughly, gathered busines thank you cards to send afterward and prepared for any question that might be thrown your way during the interview. Before you head out the door, however, you’re going to want to make sure you have everything you need. Bring these five items to each and every job interview you go to so you’re as ready as you can be:

1. Your resume
It’s likely that your interviewer will have your resume printed out or pulled up on a computer screen, but it never hurts to be prepared. Stick a few clean, crisp copies in your bag just in case. After all, you may have to pass out your resume to more than one person. You may also want to bring a list of your references, just in case the interviewer asks for them.

2. Company phone number
You never know what life is going to throw at you. Maybe there’s heavy traffic the morning of your interview, or you get lost trying to find the office. Whatever it is, you should have the interviewer or company’s phone number programmed into your cellphone. That way, if something unexpected does come up, you can immediately call and let them know what’s happening. They will appreciate you getting in touch  and keeping them up to date. They may even allow you to reschedule.

3. A notebook
You may need to take notes during the interview, whether it be on company policy or on follow-up directions. Either way, bringing a notebook and a pen (one that works) shows that you’re prepared. Make sure the notebook you bring has a professional appearance – don’t bring a used notebook you wrote in back in college.

4. Portfolio
Carry a portfolio to your interview so you have solid examples of your work you can show. The importance of having a portfolio differs from field to field. For instance, if you’re trying to get a job in animation or interior design, having a tactile example of successful work you’ve done can really showcase your abilities.

5. A Tide To-Go pen
Coffee is a must-have for many people before an interview, but sometimes that morning beverage can end up on your clothing. You want your interviewer to be focused on your skills and personality, not the giant brown stain on your blouse. Have a Tide To-Go pen in your purse to help you out if and when this emergency arises.
