5 writing essentials to keep at your desk

Stocking your writing desk with plenty of supplies can make composing letters and messages a lot more efficient and fun. You might already have the basics writing necessities on hand, but you need more to continuously create unique notes for friends and family. Here is a list of five writing essentials you need to have at your desk:

1. Writing utensils
No doubt you have a least two or three pens and pencils floating around your house. However, you might appreciate having a more specific writing utensil for your letters. For example, a packet of multi-colored pens allows you to mix up your writing with shades of ink that complement the paper you're using.

If unconventional ink colors aren't your favorite option, then maybe you're good at calligraphy. In this case, you should keep a reliable calligraphy pen and ink bottles on hand. When you sit down to write your messages, you can bring out your special pen to give your readers an artfully transcribed card.

2. Stationery
Ruled notebook paper is too plain for your letters. Instead, send personalized stationery. The carefully detailed material will show your personality and style. Along with this decorative paper, you should also have an assortment of greeting cards on hand. This way, you'll have a message that's ready to go for birthdays and other events.

Getting a card assortment is a smart choice because you get a wide variety of notes. Personalize each card by handwriting a brief message inside the card. Your reader will appreciate the gesture.

3. Stamps
Head to the post office and order some stamps to keep at your desk. However, don't just buy the first ones you see. Consider what kind of messages you like to send and what your stationery looks like. Try to choose stamp collections that match the overall look of your cards. The stamp is the finishing touch on a letter, so using colorful and decorated postage can go a long way.

You also shouldn't feel limited to Forever Stamps. This is the most convenient type of postage, but not your only option. Try stocking up on 10 and 15 cent stamps, then use them to create an interesting collage on the front of your envelope. Your cards and stationery are already beautiful so why not make the envelope decorative, as well?

4. Envelopes
Branch out from the traditional white, rectangular envelope by gathering multi-colored packets. You'll enjoy matching the envelopes to your stationery and giving your message that extra embellishment. In addition, your recipients will be excited to see the brightly hued paper every time they receive a letter.

5. Organizers
Finally, you should have some way of organizing your supplies. This is important because you don't want your space to be cluttered and messy. If your desk has several drawers, this may offer enough places for storing all of your essentials. If it does not, however, then you should get a small container to place on the corner of your desk or set a shelf within easy reach.
