Dear Ms. Cards Etiquette,
I feel silly asking this, but what is the proper way to put a card in the envelope?
Amy B.
Believe it or not, Amy, many people ask this question! It has long been a debate at all the etiquette parties Ms. Cards Etiquette attends. Should the fold go up or down? Should the front of the card be facing the address portion of the envelope or the back? Oh, the debates are long and vigorous!
Some folks insist that the card should be placed in the envelope with the fold down so money or other inserts will not fall out and that the letter opener doesn’t slice open the card. Other people are adamant that the fold must go up in the envelope so that when it is opened the card will be face up and ready to read.
In all actuality, it doesn’t matter. Whatever makes the most sense to you is fine. I personally, put the card in the envelope with the fold up and the front of the card facing the back of the envelope. That way, people can see the card when they unseal the envelope.
Really, though. It’s your preference.
