There’s nothing more romantic than a handwritten love letter.

You would think that most little boys might want toys, candy or video games if they could be granted one wish, but 6-year-old Danny Nickerson only wanted one thing for his birthday: mail.

Paper can be used to spread messages of joy, gratitude and even sympathy using holiday cards, thank you cards and sympathy cards. Linda Binder, 49, found another powerful use for paper: giving hope to cancer patients.

Writing out your thoughts by hand in this digital age shows you took the time to sit down, carefully plan what you were going to say, and put the effort into creating something physical rather than just sending an email.

With young children growing up in a world filled with iPads, smartphones and computers, not many are familiar with the art of writing letters or sending thank you cards. But this important form of communication isn’t being phased out, thanks to Montgomery County’s America Writes program.
