President Theodore Roosevelt was concerned for the ecology long before it was politically correct. He decided to lead the nation in protecting our forests by refusing to have a Christmas tree in the White House. The problem was that he forgot how important Christmas trees are to children. One of his sons wanted a tree so badly that he sneaked a tree into the White House and hid it in his closet. Roosevelt promptly sent the boy to the head of the National Forest Service, who explained that fire was far more damaging to our forests than harvesting Christmas trees. There have been Christmas trees in the White House ever since.
Do you remember the delight you felt as a child as you looked with wonder at a Christmas tree? The twinkling lights appeared to shine through the branches like stars. The ornaments may have been made of beautiful glass or perhaps they were homemade paper chains.
Whether you had a tree as lavish as one found in the White House or a small artificial one was not really so important. It was the magic of creeping out of bed on Christmas Eve to see if Santa Claus had come and seeing the normally dark living room sparkling with the lights from the Christmas tree. There may have been many presents under the tree or only a few, but the anticipation was the same. In the morning it would be Christmas!
As adults, we are still charmed by a lovely Christmas tree. That is why CardsDirect features them on many beautiful Christmas Tree Cards. There are elegant cards with silver or gold embossing, some that bring a sigh of nostalgia and others that give a chuckle. For those of you who prefer Christmas palms, there are Tropical Christmas Cards that allow you to almost feel the warm sea breezes.
