Having family or friends over to your home for the highly anticipated turkey dinner? While this can be a big responsibility, the event offers you the perfect opportunity to showcase your creativity. You should certainly be putting your energy into the menu (of course), but this doesn’t mean that you should overlook your place settings. After all, the way your table is decorated can help set the mood and make your delicious meal all the more enjoyable. After you’ve browsed through potential Thanksgiving cards, check out these trendy and fall-inspired place setting ideas for Thanksgiving (after all, it’s never too early to plan):
Chalkboard place mats
If you’re going to be playing host to a multitude of little ones on Thanksgiving, offer them chalkboard place mats. They only add to the stylish look of your table, and they will keep the kids busy long after they have devoured their meals.
Simply cover a few canvas panels with chalkboard paint and put pieces of chalk at their place settings to encourage them to doodle.
Pumpkins aren’t just for Halloween. Gather a few of your favorite gourds (of all different sizes) and transform them into candle votives for a perfectly on-theme way to illuminate your Thanksgiving table.
Use a floral cutter to remove the stem from each pumpkin. Then reach for a hand drill to cut about 1/2-inch into the pumpkin and insert the votive. If you’re planning on using the gourds right away, you can light the candles and place the pumpkins on your table. But if you’re preparing these gourds a day in advance (it shouldn’t be any earlier than that), store them in a cool, dry location, like the basement.
Pumpkin place cards
I’m not done talking about pumpkins quite yet. This fall essential can be used to decorate your table in so many ways. Get a mini pumpkin for each guest that will be eating at your table. Wash the pumpkins, then let them dry. Cover them with a metallic gold or silver spray paint, and leave them untouched overnight.
Then, write each guest’s name on a place card cut out of brown kraft paper. Attach the place cards to the stem of each pumpkin using a piece of twine. Place a gourd on each place setting for an adorable way to adorn your table.
Stalks of wheat
Creating a beautiful Thanksgiving table doesn’t have to take much effort. Place three or four tall, skinny glass cylinders across the middle of your table. Fill each vase with stalks of wheat. Add a punch of color with deep red place mats or a beautiful table runner.
Give your place setting an earthy, natural vibe by using leaves as your place cards. Gather magnolia leaves and use a pen or marker with gold or silver ink to write each guest’s name directly on the edge of the leaf. Coordinate the color of the leaves with similarly colored napkins. Place the leaf atop the napkin for a stylish and simple place setting.
Neon pine cones
During the fall season, you see a lot of warm oranges, reds, golds and yellows. But that doesn’t mean that bright hues don’t have a place at your Thanksgiving dinner table. If you want to create a truly unique Thanksgiving place setting, combine your favorite neon hues with pine cones. I mean, how cool is this pine cone card holder?
Making these colorful pine cones couldn’t be more simple. All you need is a paper plate, a pine cone, acrylic paint and a paint brush. You can either dab each individual scale of your pine cone directly into the paint, or use the brush to precisely apply the color. Let each pine cone dry overnight. Wedge your place cards between the scales at the top, and set a pine cone on each plate.
You can use the same color on each pine cone or experiment with a few different hues to create an eclectic table setting.
