Don’t worry – it’s still summer. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t start thinking about how to transform your home decor to match the changing of the seasons. The next major holiday coming up is Halloween, the perfect opportunity for a costume party (check out these great on-theme party invitations for your event). However, you have to fill your home with jack-o-lanterns, ghosts and fake spider webs. Here’s how to be a bit more subtle and trendy with your holiday party decor:
Dress up your porch
Spruce up your front porch to set the scene for your Halloween soiree. Instead of decorating with plain pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns, glam things up a bit by painting your gourds in a metallic hue, like these gold pumpkins. Feel free to create fun patterns on your gourds as well, like these pumpkins dressed in stripes and polka dots. Here’s how to create your own metallic pumpkins:
1. Remove any dirt from the pumpkins with a damp rag – you’ll want a smooth and clean surface to apply the paint.
2. Spray paint the entire pumpkin, holding it by the stem. When it dries, apply a second coat of spray paint and let it dry for 24 hours. You can choose to add more coats for a darker metallic sheen.
3. If you want to create patterns on your gourds, tape decorative stencils of your choice to the pumpkin, and use a different color spray paint to fill in the stencil.
Use a chalkboard menu
Cover a platter with dark chalkboard paint to create your drink menu for the evening. Scribble “Pick your poison” at the top, and write out all of the spooky drink options. You can mount the platter on a wall or put it on display on a side table. Serve bottles of liquor and beer in a matte black cauldron.
Reuse wine bottles
You can use empty, clean wine bottles as a way to hold your own beverage creations. You can even create your own spooky labels for the drinks and adorn them with fun names like “Witch’s Brew” or “Ghoul-tini.”
Create Halloween prints
What’s more modern than clean typography? Hang fun Halloween phrases on your wall such as “Eat, Drink & Be Scary” or “Say Boo and Scary On.” Apply adhesive letters (which can be found at any craft store) to a blank canvas, and spray paint over the entire thing with your choice of paint. Let it dry, and hang it on your wall for some truly creative Halloween decor. These canvases will be pieces that you’ll love to re-use every Halloween.
