Getting organized for the holidays

The holidays are a time to reminisce and form new memories with family and friends. But this time of year is also when you have to cross more than a few things off of your to-do list, such as holiday shopping, decorating and more. Organization is key to a streamlined holiday season, and these tips can help you tackle any to-do list:

Make a list
It can be tough to remember all that you have to accomplish during the holiday season, which is why creating a task list can come in handy. It can be written on a sticky note on your fridge or in a note on your smartphone. Jot down every responsibility from decorating the Christmas tree and mailing holiday cards to party planning, gift shopping and any travel plans. Consider delegating some of the tasks to other friends or family members so you don't get overwhelmed this holiday season.

Gather writing materials
When it comes time to send out your holiday cards, you're going to need to locate writing materials, envelopes, stamps, addresses, etc. In order to make this process as efficient as possible, it's best to have everything you need organized into one location, such as a shelf or a tote. Consider handwriting notes inside each card and addressing a few envelopes per day so that you won't have to send off a stack of 100 cards in one sitting.

Create a gift-wrapping zone
Wrapping gifts can be made much easier if you have all the materials you need in one place. Choose a space in your home, whether it's a spare bedroom, a basement or a section of the kitchen and gather the appropriate supplies nearby. It's best to select a space where you'll have privacy, as you don't want your gift recipients strolling in as you're wrapping. Pick up a clear tote from the craft store and fill it with your wrapping paper, then designate another container for all of the embellishments, like ribbons, bows and gift tags. Using clear storage boxes allows you to see what's inside so you don't have to go digging for what you want.

Take pictures
When you create the perfect holiday table setting or decorate your fireplace mantel just right, take a picture. This way, you'll have a reminder of your decor style when next year rolls around, which will save you time.
