Looking for something a bit different to send this year? Why not consider an attractive holiday greeting that is also earth friendly! Recycled greeting cards may be the perfect answer.
Recycled Greeting Cards
Recycled greetings have come a long way. It is almost difficult to tell which are printed on recycled paper now that paper processing has been refined to include nice, clean white paper made from recycled fibers. The recycled symbol printed on the back is your only clue in some instances!

Of course, if you prefer, brown Kraft recycled paper in which you can see some of the recycled fibers is still available. With hundreds of designs to choose from, you are sure to find the perfect seasonal greeting that also lets your customers, business associates, friends and family know that you are doing your part to help save planet Earth.

Today is May 1, also known as May Day.  This day holds special meaning in various parts of the world.  In the U.S., tradition calls for dancing around a maypole tied with colorful ribbons and surprising people by leaving flowers at their doorsteps.

Thinking of You Cards

Not having a maypole handy, or the funds for distant flower deliveries, I like to use this day as a reminder to remember friends and family with a surprise “Thinking of You” greeting card.  I have many friends I send Christmas Cards to and like to remember them midway through the year as well, which makes May Day the perfect mailing date for such an expression.

Sent for no particular reason, Thinking of You Cards are just opportunities to reconnect and surprise someone with a thoughtful gesture.  This floral design printed on recycled paper is my choice this year.

Maybe you might like to start such a tradition yourself!

Earth Day is April 22

Earth Day is April 22 and CardsDirect has created a program encouraging school children to do their part to save our Earth. CardsDirect has provided exclusively designed Earth Day Cards to participating schools so that they can take action to promote environmental awareness.
Earth Day Cards
By proclaiming “My Pledge to the Earth”, children publicly declare what they will do to help protect the planet. Big or small, the campaign helps them learn that their actions matter and that the future is in their hands. Children write their pledge on the recycled cards that are printed on 100% recycled card stock. The cards are then collected and sent to President Obama in response to his “New Era of Responsibility”.

Congratulations to these participating schools. For teachers interested in participating in the “My Pledge to the Earth” program, please see the Earth Day Collection here. Cards can be mailed directly to President Obama courtesy of The White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20500.

Earth Day April 22
Every day should be Earth Day but on one special day, April 22, we will all focus our attention on what we can do to help save our planet. CardsDirect has just launched a line of Earth Day Cards perfect for celebrating the occasion.

Want to see how your Ecological Footprint measures up? Take this Earth Day Network Ecological Footprint Calculator quiz to see how many resources are needed to support your current lifestyle. You may be amazed at the results and motivated to take the suggested actions for improvement at the end of the quiz.

One way to begin is by participating in Earth Day itself. Look for activities in your community or plan one of your own. Perhaps your company can sponsor an event, or work with your human resources department to initiate a company-wide program. A simple and effective change would be to use Recycled Greeting Cards. Remember those special to you and your business with greeting cards printed on 100% recycled card stock that says you care about them and the environment.

When it comes to caring about the planet we all live on, no effort is too small. Use April 22 as a start date to affect changes in your daily routine that will improve life for you and for those around you, now and forever.

The boxes and boxes of donated used and unused greeting cards are coming in from everywhere through our Recycling and Reuse Program. They are being sorted between those that go to charities for repurposing and those that will be sent to a recycling company for pulping. The post office is closed today for Presidents Day but tomorrow we’ll be sending out several box loads of great cards to St. Judes Ranch for Children for repurposing.

I have to admit that I enjoy looking through the cards received. All the nice embossing and glittering on some of the beautiful cards make me miss the not so long ago holiday season. It is also fun to see where all the cards are coming from, and I can tell you, they are coming from everywhere! We’re not just talking holiday cards either. We’ve received birthday, sympathy, get well and just about every other category imaginable.
Unused Greeting Cards Received
Many took the time to remove the signed or personalized portion of the card before they sent them to us which is quite helpful. Many, however, left that special message from Aunt Mary or the signatures of all the company employees but we make sure those go no further. I think repurposing cards is a great idea. Not just environmentally friendly, they can make lovely gift tags, napkin rings, placemats or any sort of crafty diy project.

We’ve received many boxes that included blank unused envelopes in various sizes and some with personalization printed on them. If you have any suggestions on how envelopes with the flaps removed can be repurposed, let me know as I’d love to share those ideas and send those partial envelopes on to someone who can make use of them. A big thanks to all those who have sent us your unused cards!

As we did last year, CardsDirect is now accepting your unused greeting cards. We sort and send those that can be reused to non-profit organizations that can make use of them. This is a great way to de-clutter your surroundings as well as do something nice that will benefit others and the environment.

We can accept printed and unprinted cards as many charities will take the front of the cards and paste them on blanks or use them for craft projects. Christmas and holiday cards, unused birthday cards and sympathy cards; all are welcome. For those cards that are not in the best of shape or suitable for reuse we will deliver them to an approved recycling center.

If interested, send all your unwanted greeting cards, with or without envelopes, to:

CardsDirect Recycling and Reuse Program
200 Chisholm Place, Suite 220
Plano, TX 75075

Click here for more information on the CardsDirect Recycled and Reuse Program.

And, if you are or know of deserving non-profit organizations that may be interested in these donated cards, let us know.
