I just love receiving holiday cards each year but what do you do with them when the decorations come down?

Here are some suggestions:

Recycle.  Cut them up to use them as gift tags or package decorations next year.  Or, donate them to charities that can put them to good use.

Thank You Cards.  Cut the cover off and fold it in half to use as thank you notes for all those Christmas gifts.  Trim to fit envelopes found at office supply stores.

Keepsakes.  Many cards make great keepsakes, especially photo cards.  Make a collage of those saved over the years for a great surprise gift for someone special.

Original Art.  Cut up pieces of cards and paste them together to form a beautiful mosaic masterpiece.

Mailing Lists.  Remember to update your mailing lists, editing changes of address and adding new contacts.

For more details see the article How to Repurpose Holiday Cards.  With a bit of organization now, you’ll be all set for the holidays next year!

Holiday Cards come in all shapes and sizes, with colorful foils and intricately embossed details, die cuts and multi-layers, but some of the nicest are fine art prints taken from original hand painted illustrations. These cards are elegant but simple with a lovely illustration being the main focus.
Silent Night Holiday Fine Art Greeting

From winter scenes to paintings by the old masters, Fine Art Holiday Cards send holiday greetings in richly illustrated details. From snow scenes and cityscapes to religious depictions of Mary and angels, these seasonal greetings are attractive and suitable for framing.

Taken to a more personal level, a favorite this year is the original watercolor my parents are sending to all of those on their greeting card list, of which there are many. My mother was an elementary art teacher for years and now paints for her own enjoyment. In years past my dad has printed their cards on his home computer, some years with great success, others, not so much. This year they entrusted CardsDirect to reproduce the original artwork on photo cards and the results turned out perfectly.

With photo cards you can have whatever you want printed on the front and add your own custom imprinted verse and personalization inside. This is one card you will never find in stores or online and there is no chance that anyone on your list will receive a duplicate. I know my parent’s friends look forward to seeing Marj’s original art each year and the card this year is even more special with personalization, a custom imprinted verse and envelopes lined in gold.

Consider beautiful fine art cards for your holiday greeting this year or create your own from original art you, one of your business associates or even a child creates.

I received my first Christmas card of the season yesterday! It is one of the cards I look forward to receiving most each year as it always includes a picture of my college friend and her family. Its fun watching her children grow up and seeing how she is aging as well!

The family picture is usually taken at some fabulous vacation spot which may explain how she always manages to have her cards in the mail early each year. This year’s photo was taken on a beach and my sorority sister is wearing a bathing suit! Now it has been quite some time since I’ve seen her in person, but I can assure you we’re no spring chickens and I am amazed at how well she has held up!

Holiday photo cards don’t have to be in elaborate holiday settings with everyone smiling in red and green; any fun snapshot will do. My friend always includes one of those newsletter updates too. I know some people make fun of those but I actually enjoy hearing what she and her family have been up to during the past year.

I find that Christmas cards are great for keeping in touch with those you just don’t see or talk to that often. You just never know when your paths may cross and you might wind up at the same vacation resort. Of course, if that were to happen with us, I’m hoping it would be at a winter ski lodge!

Happy Holidays!

Photo holiday cards are always popular greetings. Everyone loves to receive updated pictures of you and family members or just the children each year. It is great fun to watch everyone grow and change from year to year, especially when you can’t visit in person.

But, it certainly isn’t easy to get everyone all dressed up in their matching holiday attire (before its even cold outside) and grouped together for that annual holiday photo shoot. Getting all family members in the same place at the same time is a chore. Add the difficulty of getting that perfect backdrop and everyone’s hair in place and you have the makings of a family meltdown!

You’ll always find one in the bunch that just will not smile on demand, no matter what incentive you offer. And if you have a teenager involved, forget it! The hair is never perfect enough and no one wants to smile at the same time. Mom wishes she were skinnier and dad just wants it done! The baby won’t stop crying and that pushing the camera button and running to get in the shot can be a real adventure!

So, how do you capture the family moment in style without suffering and still have an end product you’ll enjoy sharing with your family and friends?! How about this…

Dear Ms. Cards Etiquette,

I am sending a New Years photo card of myself and my grandson’s and I am unsure how to sign the card. Three of my Grandson’s are my son’s children (last name Smith, including myself) and 2 of my grandsons are my daughter’s (last name Jones). Is it correct that I imprint the photo cards “With love, Grandma Cindy and the Smith grandson’s?”

Thanks so much for your help.
Grandma Cindy

Great question, Grandma Cindy! It is sometimes confusing when you have different last names.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind: you do need to list your daughter’s last name on the card, otherwise it appears all of the children are only related to your son.

Also, people like to be able to determine the names of who is in the photo they are looking at. So, if you have enough space — and if you are ordering photo cards from CardsDirect, you should ;) — I’d list everyone’s name in the order they are in the photograph.

So, let’s assume the 3 that are your son’s are on the left side and the two that are your daughter’s are on the right. Then, you’d have this:

“With love, Grandma Cindy & her Grandsons:
Tyler, Jason & Thomas Smith
Michael & David Jones”

If you don’t have that much room, or if the children are mixed up in the photo, leave everyone’s last name out of it:

“With love, Grandma Cindy & her Grandsons:
Michael, David, Tyler, Jason & Thomas”
(assuming they are lined up that way in the photograph.)

You can put your name at the beginning since you’re obviously the only Grandma in the picture.

Photo cards are a great way to keep in touch with friends and family at any time of the year. Happy holidays and have a great New Year!

CardsDirect has added many new designs of our photo cards just in time for the holiday season! Honestly, I’m excited because we’ve really added some great new designs to our collection. While we’ve kept old favorites such as the elegant border-less sepia card design and full color design, we’ve also added cards with a chic modern look such as our contemporary blue and chocolate photo card and our Holly Print Photo card.

We’ve also added red pin stripe design and red border designs that have shown to be particularly popular. Our Ornate Trim & Text photo card has a beveled design and is perfect for giving a particularly formal look to your pictures.

If you have children or — as in my case multiple pets — you may want to display more than one image. To meet that need, we’ve added the 3 Photo Red Border photo card for a tasteful way to display multiple images. Or, if you can’t find any photos you absolutely love, we can always feature your child’s artwork for a truly unique holiday card.

Of course, all cards can be customized to be vertical or horizontal to best showcase your images, and all are printed on premium card stock. And we always email you a proof of your photo card before your it is printed so you will know exactly what it will look like.

Each of these uniquely stylish designs include all of our customization options, including your choice of holiday-theme verses printed in each card, and additional lines of personalized text to really add a professional and personal touch to your mailing. Lined envelopes are always included with each order for no extra charge.

If you have any questions, call in to our customer service department at 1.866.700.5030 or email support@CardsDirect.com and a ask away. Our hard-working customer service reps have been going the extra mile to meet the demand of this busy holiday season.

Dear Ms. Cards Etiquette

I run a small company, and I’d like to do something very friendly and personal for our Christmas cards this year. Is it OK for a business to send photo X-mas cards, or should we stick to a more traditional card style?

Friendly in Fargo

Photo cards are a great idea Friendly, especially for small businesses! With a small business, especially, your customers come in and see the same people every time. Photo cards are a wonderful way for customers to put names to the faces they see in your office. CardsDirect offers free personalized text on your cards, so you can add a caption that lists everyone’s name in order of appearance on the card.

Even for larger companies, photo cards can be a wonderful way for your business to present a more personal face to the people on your mailing list. If you have a customer service center that serves your clients on a face to face basis, you could use a photograph of your customer service staff. If you deal with clients on a mostly remote basis, you could use a photo of your company officers in casual dress to make your business feel more familiar to your contacts.

So, Friendly, the anser is yes, it is absolutely OK for a business to send a photo Christmas Card. In fact, it is a wonderfully memorable way to put a friendly face on your business during the holiday season … just make sure you have a good photographer, because you always want to put your best face forward!
