Easiest Cake EverMy friend at work, Leah, told me about this cake recipe. I don’t really enjoy cooking but I sure do love deserts and this one is not only easy, but low calorie too! With only two ingredients, what’s not to love?!
Are you ready? Here it is:

1 Box Cake Mix
1 Can Diet Soda

Yep, that is all there is to it. Mix the two together and bake as per the directions on the cake box. Don’t add eggs or water or oil or anything else, just the mix and the soda. For chocolate, use a chocolate cake mix and dark soda. For a yellow or white cake, use a yellow or white mix and a light colored diet soda. Make sure you use diet though as a regular soda just doesn’t have the same chemical reaction and who needs all of those extra calories anyway!

Great for office pot-lucks, birthdays or just a quick and easy something sweet to eat, this is absolutely a fun way to bake!

Do you have any super easy recipes to suggest?

National Etiquette WeekI would like to politely remind everyone that this is National Etiquette Week. I know, I know! I didn’t realize it was this week either but for the past 13 years the second week in May has been officially proclaimed National Etiquette Week. We are encouraged to refresh our memories when it comes to the rules of etiquette and protocol. For a quick update on a few points of business etiquette that would make Emily Post proud, consider these:

Introductions. Introduce yourself and those around you to each other. Extend a hand for a firm handshake and look them in the eye while expressing a genuine greeting.

Appearance. It is always best to dress to impress but don’t overdo it. A conservative approach is often best if the proper attire for an event is unknown. Always, always bath and wear clean clothes in good repair. As mom might say, “Comb your hair, wash your face and brush your teeth”.

Meetings. Be on time and come prepared. Turn your cell phone off. Know the meeting agenda and be ready to contribute. Make eye contact and warmly greet everyone in the room. Stay positive.

Communication. Return phone calls or emails as soon as possible even if only to acknowledge the call for a future follow-up. When placing a call, state your name before asking to speak to someone. When leaving a voice mail message, leave your return phone number even if you know they already have it. Keep the message brief. If on speakerphone or a 3-way call, make sure the person at the other end is aware.

General. Please and thank you never goes out of style. Don’t chew gum or wear overpowering perfume or aftershave. Keep conversation mainstream by discussing the weather, current sporting events or movies. Never ever bring up politics, religion or gossip.

Please practice these simple but valuable rules of business etiquette and you and your business are sure to reap benefits. Thank you!

Office DaycareOther than a fat paycheck, health insurance and fantastic vacation schedules, what can a business offer its employees that they would appreciate most? A recent poll listed some choices employers might offer and asked employees to rank them. Here are the results:

Flexible Working Hours 57%
Telecommuting 16%
On-site Daycare 11%
Extended Hours/ 10%
Shortened Work Week
Job Sharing 3%
On Site Dry Cleaning 2%
Take Home Meals 1%

Why not make your own list of services or ideas that would work at your company and take a survey to see what your employees are most interested in? They don’t necessarily have to cost the company money and the results may not be what you may have expected.

St. Patrick’s Day is this Wednesday! Don’t forget to wear green or you’ll risk getting pinched! Why pinched? There are all sorts of explanations so no one is absolutely certain how it all began but most agree it is an American tradition.
St. Patrick's Day
According to one source, the tradition began in the early 1700s in Boston. The story goes that Leprechauns pinch. If you wore green you would be invisible to Leprechauns. Being seen as helpful, people would pinch you as a reminder if you forgot to wear green! Another explanation is that wearing green showed respect for the Emerald Isles which is Ireland’s nickname.

What stories have you heard regarding pinching and the wearing of the green?

It’s budget time and although we should be working to control costs throughout the year, it seems cost cutting measures are focused on when we crunch our annual numbers. How is your company working to control costs? One simple change can certainly make a profound difference as the following story indicates.
Vending Machine
An observant Walmart store manager in North Carolina sent an e-mail to upper management asking why all the lights in the vending machines in the break rooms needed to be on. Walmart unplugged the lights and is saving $1.4 million. This is just one example of a company employee coming up with a significant but simple cost saving suggestion.

Walmart encourages their employees to sniff out this sort of thing, believing there are three criteria all companies must develop to have a successful sustainability program: buy in at senior level management; set goals—one overly aspirational/one attainable; and get started.

Does your company encourage such actions? Please share your simple but cost savings solutions. I bet we could all use them!

Holiday Party Temptations
Oh, the holidays! Fancy foods, family feasts, holiday parties; eat, drink and be merry! But beware, holiday party pounds can creep up on you rather quickly. There are, however, ways to avoid this added poundage by planning ahead and considering these simple tips when accepting holiday party invitations.

1. Eat a little something nutritious before you head out to party. If you are not starving when you arrive, you are far less likely to chow down at the buffet table of tempting holiday treats.

2. Sit or stand as far away from the food as possible. Put as many people and as much space as you can between you and the goodies.

3. Keep your hands otherwise occupied. A diet drink in one hand and your purse in the other will make it more difficult to juggle a plate of Christmas cookies.

4. Talk, talk, talk! Keep your mouth moving by meeting people and enjoying conversation and you won’t have time to stuff it with food!

5. Avoid the over consumption of alcohol. This one isn’t just about weight gain, although alcohol is loaded with calories, it is a wise idea everyone should consider! Have one drink then switch to something less caloric. You’ll enjoy the party and the day after as well!
Holiday Party Invitations
It is the holidays though so do allow yourself one special treat. You won’t find those holiday bourbon balls at any other time of the year so indulge within reason by popping one or two and you can ignore all those weight loss commercials that pop up in January!

Social Kiss
Don’t you just love the holiday season? Holiday cards, Christmas cookies, decorations and parties! You get to see all sorts of family and friends and attend wonderful festive gatherings and family get-togethers. Of course, given the dreaded H1N1 virus we all fear, you may want to pay special attention to your form of meeting and greeting this season.

We all now know to sneeze or cough into our elbows, but what about the obligatory social kiss or welcoming handshake? Many of us expect a kiss on arrival and when we leave but how are we to continue this tradition in a germ-filled world? Consider these steps to proper etiquette with attention to health.
Holiday Air Kiss
I bet all of us have an aunt who just loves to welcome us with a kiss, if not two! The popular kiss on both cheeks was invented by the French but has become internationally popular. To execute one properly you do not need to actually place lips to cheek. You kiss the air on either side to make it look as if you had connected. This year your “air kiss” can be contained to one side only and you should consider an even wider gap when leaning toward the ear. Be the initiate and you can escape quickly, avoided an unhealthy exchange while preventing hurt feelings.

The traditional handshake too has been modified. Adopt a more “hip” approach by initiating a fist or elbow bump instead! That way you’ll avoid palm to palm contact and get the party started with an upbeat laugh for two. The recipient will no doubt appreciate your intent as well!

Do you have any other healthy greeting alternatives to get the holiday parties and family gatherings off to a great start this year?
