No need to toss holiday cards once the season is over, recycle them by making them into holiday gift boxes. These small boxes are great for tiny gifts or tuck small gifts in them and hang them on the tree. The boxes are just like those you use for other presents, only smaller.

Begin by taking your Christmas cards and cutting on the fold. You can use the white half for the bottom of the box and the colorful half for the top or box lid. You may need to trim each a bit so they are the same size. Determine the depth of the box by drawing a square at each corner. For example, if your box is to be 1” deep, draw a 1” square in each corner.

Score all four sides of the card along this 1” dimension. Then, make a cut 1” in on each of the four sides to form a tab, folding the tabs up like this:

Fold the sides in and glue the tabs in place and you’re halfway there! Repeat this same process for the box top. For a good fit, under trim the entire bottom card piece about 1/16” so that the top will fit snuggly over it.

Once you have done one box the process will seem much easier and you will be on your way to creating a wonderful collection of recycled boxes you will enjoy using and sharing.

Social Kiss
Don’t you just love the holiday season? Holiday cards, Christmas cookies, decorations and parties! You get to see all sorts of family and friends and attend wonderful festive gatherings and family get-togethers. Of course, given the dreaded H1N1 virus we all fear, you may want to pay special attention to your form of meeting and greeting this season.

We all now know to sneeze or cough into our elbows, but what about the obligatory social kiss or welcoming handshake? Many of us expect a kiss on arrival and when we leave but how are we to continue this tradition in a germ-filled world? Consider these steps to proper etiquette with attention to health.
Holiday Air Kiss
I bet all of us have an aunt who just loves to welcome us with a kiss, if not two! The popular kiss on both cheeks was invented by the French but has become internationally popular. To execute one properly you do not need to actually place lips to cheek. You kiss the air on either side to make it look as if you had connected. This year your “air kiss” can be contained to one side only and you should consider an even wider gap when leaning toward the ear. Be the initiate and you can escape quickly, avoided an unhealthy exchange while preventing hurt feelings.

The traditional handshake too has been modified. Adopt a more “hip” approach by initiating a fist or elbow bump instead! That way you’ll avoid palm to palm contact and get the party started with an upbeat laugh for two. The recipient will no doubt appreciate your intent as well!

Do you have any other healthy greeting alternatives to get the holiday parties and family gatherings off to a great start this year?

North Pole Photo Holiday Card
Want to make your holiday cards extra special? Why not have them postmarked from the North Pole!
This is what you do—
Address each envelope as usual, including your return address. Put a first class stamp on each as well. Then, box them all up, add appropriate postage, and send them to:
North Pole Holiday Postmark
Postmaster
4141 Postmark Dr.
Anchorage, AK 99530-9998

Each individual card will then be mailed from Alaska with a North Pole postmark on them!
Letters must be received in Anchorage before December 15.
Mailing Holiday Cards
North Pole, Alaska may be the most popular holiday related postmark but there are others. Just do the same as above but send your combined cards to the attention of “Christmas Re-Mailing” to one of these possible post offices:

Bethlehem, CT 06751
Blessing, TX 77419
Christmas, FL 32709
Holly, CO 81047
Joy, IL 61260
Mistletoe, KY 41351
Nazareth, KY 40048
Noel, MO 64854
Rudolph, OH 43462
Santa, ID 83866
Santa Claus, IN 47579

Add some fun to your holiday cards and don’t forget to use those holiday first class stamps! There are other holiday themed cities you might want to consider as well. Any suggestions?

Unique Format Holiday Card
Are you ready? Your mailbox is soon to be filled with incoming holiday cards in all colors, shapes and sizes. After you have opened, read and enjoyed each of them, consider this:

Before you toss the envelope the card came in, compare the return address to the one you have on file. Now is the perfect time to update your contact information. You may also want to write this address on the back of the card itself so you can refresh your addresses later, after the holiday rush is done if you prefer.

Many enjoy displaying their holiday cards throughout the office or at home. Tape them to your office door or cubicle for all to see and enjoy. Or make a mobile, hanging them from above to spin and delight without taking up valuable workspace.
Home at Christmas Holiday Card
At home, line them up on your mantel and sprinkle them around on coffee tables and sideboards. You can pin them to a strip of wide ribbon and hang them on the wall or even punch a hole in the corner and display them on the tree. Holiday cards are fun, colorful and interesting, adding a taste of the season throughout the house. Photo cards are especially fun. Friends that don’t even know those pictured will enjoy viewing them.
Currier & Ives Holiday Card
Many cards are richly illustrated and would look lovely framed and displayed throughout the year. And make sure you save your Christmas cards at the end of the season. In January I’ll share craft ideas so that you can repurpose these cards for enjoyment next year!

Do you have a unique craft idea to share? Let us know. We’d love to include you in our after-season craft blog.

Happy Thanksgiving

I just wanted to send a big thank you shout out to everyone! I hope you all enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday and opportunity to meet and eat with friends and family while remaining mindful of all we have to be thankful for.

I am personally blessed to have a loving and supportive family at home as well as at work. My office family at CardsDirect is the best! In our line of business we get into the holiday spirit quite early! We are thinking Christmas even before the decorations start popping up at retail, and that seems to be happening earlier and earlier these days!

We are appreciative of our valued customers who return year after year to place their greeting card orders. We know they are showing true thanks and appreciation to those they value throughout the year as well. Whether in the form of Thanksgiving cards or holiday cards, make sure you thank those who are important to you in some way and take a moment to reflect on all there is to be personally thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Santa Christmas Card
How sad is this? The US Post Office will no longer be sending letters from Santa at the North Pole. This tradition that began in the 50’s has hit a speed bump. For years children have sent letters to Santa at the North Pole. Postal employees and volunteers have been answering them by the thousands.

Sadly, it seems one such volunteer was discovered to be a convicted sex offender and with children’s addresses and their privacy at stake, the post office has been forced to pull the plug on this longtime tradition. In some areas letters are assigned a computer code so that the return address is not seen. The real town of North Pole, Alaska does not have that capability though so letters sent to the North Pole will not be responded to this year.
Santa Relaxing Holiday Card
Santa’s elves employed by the post office will still answer letters sent locally but how special is a letter from Santa postmarked Dallas, Texas for example?

If you want a letter sent from Santa at the North Pole, here is a way to make it happen. Write a letter from Santa yourself. Put it in an envelope addressed to the recipient with Santa, North Pole as the return address. Be sure and put a first class stamp on it. Next, take this letter and put it inside another envelope. Address that envelope to:

North Pole Holiday Postmark
Postmaster
4141 Postmark Dr.
Anchorage, AK 99530-9998
Santa Recycles Holiday Card
Letters must be received in Anchorage before December 15. Keep in mind; you don’t have to be a child to get a kick out of receiving a letter from Santa!

Now that you’ve selected the perfect business holiday cards to send to your valued customers, business associates and friends, you will want to pay special attention to the way these are addressed.
Personalized Holiday Cards
1. Sign. Your professionally printed and personalized holiday greetings express your custom imprinted verse in style. Although your company name is printed in ink or foil it is always a good idea to add your own personal signature. An even more personal touch is to add a quick handwritten note as well. You may only contact many of these valued people once a year so just a bit of extra effort will go a long way towards making them feel special.

2. Hand address. A hand addressed envelope stands apart from the usual junk mail. Many will open this envelope first. The recipient will appreciate the extra time and effort it took to hand-address their card. There is no need for one person’s handwriting on all of them so use several helpers if you need to. Just make sure their hand writing is acceptable! If budget allows, a hired calligrapher really adds a touch of elegance to your holiday mailing.

3. Accurate mailing list. Make certain your mailing list has the names spelled correctly. Avoid adding the person’s title as this may have changed and is not really necessary. Do spell out the company name and street address and use the more formal name such as Mr. Robert Hall, Jr. instead of Bob Hall.
Preprinted Return Address Envelopes
4. Return address. Go ahead and order your envelopes with your return address already printed on the back flap. This will insure that undeliverable cards find their way back to you so that you can update your mailing list. Pre-printed envelopes also save you time and look more professional.

5. Quick-stick envelopes. You may also want to purchase quick-stick envelopes. It is a time saver and a more professional presentation and you’ll not need sponge and water which can get messy.

6. Use postage stamps. Although metered mail is easy, use postage stamps for your holiday cards. Select holiday stamps that suit your company’s image.

Holiday cards are warmly appreciated and let your recipients know that they are valued. Displayed throughout the season, your thoughtfulness is sure to be returned in kind.
